Que Sera Sera Chapter 24: The Fast Track

“Phew! We’re finally done!” Mike threw his huge bio book in the air. It did an ungraceful spin in the air before promptly landing in a mud puddle.

“Hm… Mike?” Ariel snickered.

“What?”

“You need that book next term.”

“Aw Shit!” Mike quickly retrieved the book, but it was almost fully soaked through.

Laughing at Mike’s attempts at drying off his book, Joe and Ariel yelled a quick good-bye to him before heading off to Joe’s house. The accounting final was tomorrow, and Ariel had pleaded with Joe for some last minute reviews.

“You know everything already Ari, so why are we doing more reviews?”

“I just need a little more help with section 3B. The prof says it’s going to be at least 30% of the exam.”

“But we went over that section at least 5 times. You know it forward and backward.”

“I just don’t want to take any chances. If I don’t get a B in this class, Prof McArthur says I won’t be able to enrol in her class next semester.”

“You didn’t tell me that earlier!”

“I know, but she only told me two days ago. Now you see what I need that review?”

———————————-

“Here you go.” Joe handed a bag of roasted chestnuts to Ariel.

“Thanks.” Ariel smiled. Who knew Joe was so considerate.

“Eat them while they’re hot, they taste better.” He said, “but not too fast, or you’ll burn yourself.”

“I know how to eat chestnuts Joe.” Ariel said wryly.

“I know that, I’m just…” He decided to be quiet. Why am blabbering like a fool? Come on Joe, show her you’re not an idiot!

“You want to walk around?” Ariel asked. Joe had insisted they get roasted chestnuts before they looked at the light displays.

“Sure.” He grabbed Ariel’s hand and led her to the nearest set of light. It was of Santa and his reindeers, and Rudolf’s nose glowed brightly.

Ariel blushed a little. No one has ever held her hand in public before, and instead of being embarrassed like she normally would be, she found she liked it.

For the next half an hour, Joe and Ariel walked around and looked at all the displays. Joe continued to hold Ariel’s hand and he was surprised she let him. It was 10 o’clock by the time they were done seeing the displays and Joe really wanted to ride the Christmas Train after. Even though she was starting to get worried about Mira at home alone, Ariel couldn’t refuse Joe’s puppy dog look. In the end, she agreed. Since it was near Christmas, the line-up was long.

Looking at all the families in the line-up, Ariel felt a little bit teary. She missed her family. A lot.

“You ok Ariel?” Joe asked, concerned.

“Yes.” Ariel gave a shaky smile. “Just thinking about my family, especially my parents.”

“Where you close to them?” Joe asked.

Ariel frowned at him, “yeah, I mean, they were my parents.”

“Oh.” Joe felt the need to defend his last comment. “It’s just that I’m not particularly close to my father. He’s off in Taiwan somewhere doing business related stuff and I haven’t seen him in at least half a year. He’s never really been there fore me, his business always came first.”

“That’s too bad.” Ariel looked pensive. “Kind of ironic. I’d do anything to talk to my dad again.”

Joe hugged her lightly. Ariel stiffened, then relaxed. “What’s that for?.”

“I don’t know.” Joe grinned. “seemed like you could use a hug.”

Ariel smiled back at him, his grin was infectious, “Thanks.”

“I’m so glad it’s almost Christmas.”

“Yes, me too. Especially since all the exams are done.”

Joe nodded, “You thought you did well on the exam, right?”

“I think so. I mean, I got answers for all the questions. I just hope I didn’t make a stupid mistake somewhere.”

“I’m sure you did fine.”

Ariel just nodded.

“Do you want to come over to my house on Christmas Day?” Joe quickly continued when Ariel looked at him questioningly. “It’s just both Mike’s and my Dad are not home on Christmas, so Mike and his Mom always come over to my house. I was just wandering if you want to come too.”

“Thanks for the offer Joe, but I don’t think so.” She elaborated when he looked disappointed. “Mira and I have been alone for years, so we developed all these weird traditions for ourselves around Christmas. One of them is that we must both stay at home.

“Besides, Mike would probably spend Christmas with Rainie.” Ariel continued him.

“Fine, I’ll just spend Christmas alone then.” Joe sighed melodramatically.

Ariel pinched him lightly before running onto the Christmas train – it was finally their turn.

On the train, they oh-ed and ah-ed like little kids at the various light exhibits. Joe put his arm around Ariel’s shoulder and she leaned on him. All too soon, it was time to go home. Joe looked increasingly uncomfortable as he drove near her basement. Although Ariel noticed, she pretended she didn’t.

“Ariel!” Joe called just before she was about to open her door.

“Yes?” She turned around.

“Do you,” He said extremely fast. “Doyouwanttogooutagainsometime?”

“What?”

Joe took a deep breath, “Do you want to go out again sometime?”

“Sure.” Ariel smiled, “but please stop sounding so nervous, it makes me nervous.”

Joe chuckled quietly, looked at her for a moment, and then leaned down and gave her a quick kiss on the lips before dashing away to his car.

Ariel stood there, rooted by the door for a long minute as she recovered from shock. That was my first kiss.

————————–

“I want all the gory details.” Rainie exclaimed excitedly.

“I told you Rainie, there aren’t any.” Ariel rolled her eyes as she was brewing coffee. Luckily, she wasn’t facing the counter, so Rainie didn’t see it. “And stop sounding like Mira. She grilled me for details when I got home last night too.”

“How can there not be any details. There’s got to be more to it than what you told me.”

“How do you know?”

“Because there is no way the only thing you did on your date was walk around Stanley Park while eating chestnuts!” Rainie sounded frustrated.

“That is all we did!” Ariel didn’t want to tell Rainie about the kiss. If she did, Rainie would probably get so excited that she would blurt it out so everyone in the Lotus could hear.

“I give up!” Rainie glared at Ariel. “You are hopeless.”

Ariel finally turned around and handed Rainie her coffee, “Jeez, what tipped you off?”

——————————-

“So you ran off? Just like that?” Mike asked incredulously.

“Yup.” Joe leaned back on the couch.

“You never cease to amaze me with the weird stuff you do around her.”

“I never cease to amaze myself.” Joe chugged down his eggnog.

“Why are you drinking eggnog?”

“My mom is making me, something about getting into the festive spirit. and if you don’t get out of here soon, she’s going to make you drink it too.”

“I’m outta here man.” Mike bolted for the door.

—————————-

“Nothing sir.” Arron reported to Ge. “We still don’t know why Ariel is hiding from him.”

Ge rubbed his temples, “why am I not surprised?”

“Our agents are concerned about James’ latest business transaction. It seems that he’s purchasing some land down in South America. The only reason we know about it is because the land he’s buying belongs to an orphanage. Since he doesn’t seem the charitable type, or San Salvador Office flagged him.”

“That is odd. Find out why he’s buying it. It’s definitely illegal, whatever it is,” Ge looked at the paperwork infront of him. “but he’s good. All his documents and paper works are perfect and his stories and alibis air tight. We can’t get any proof on him. All these cover-ups are professionally done. We need to find out who’s doing them.”

“What do we do once we find out?”

“We need to take him out. His company is making a tone of profit – far too much to be gained through legal means and he’s rapidly becoming powerful.” Ge took a close look at the piece of paper in his hands. “He’s dangerous.”

“If you say so, Sir.”

Ge frowned at Arron, “Just spit it out.”

“He is Ariel and Miranda’s stepfather. Wouldn’t they be upset if you arrest him.”

“Judging by the way they’re running from him, I don’t think so.”

“But what if they’ve only got a small quarrel with him and were merely being stubborn and wilful by running away? Wouldn’t they be upset then.”

“Ariel’s not like that. You know that. It doesn’t matter anyways. If what he’s doing is illegal, we take him down.”

————————–

“Joe, dude! Come hang out with us.” Jason yelled loudly into the receiver.

“I don’t-“ Joe started saying.

“Don’t tell me you don’t have time,” Jason slurred, he was definitely drunk. “You haven’t hanged out with us since you started going out with your new girlfriend.”

“We’ve only been going out for a few days you idiot, and stop drinking so much!”

“You’re such a pansy Joe.” Jason swore, “Maria honey, I’ll be with you in a second.”

“Where are you?”

“We’re at Jessica’s.”

“Jessica. Your blond and blue eyed ex-girl friend who swore never to talk to you again?” Joe asked in disbelief.

“Yeah, she couldn’t get enough of me.”

“And yet you’re with another girl right now?”

“So What? Jess and I are hardly exclusive.”

“You’re an ass.”

“Hey, she’s in a room with Brian. I bet you don’t need to me tell you what they’re doing.” Jason chortled as if he told a funny joke. “Oh, that feels good Janice… Oh yes Chelsea.”

“Look, I got stuff to do, I’ll see you later.”

“That lame excuse won’t work… ah… today. If you’re ah not ah here in 30 minutes, I’m going to go over to your house. We all ah know how much your mother loves me.”

Joe didn’t even want to think about what Jason was doing and felt annoyed. Mrs. Cheng hated Jason. She hated his spiky hair, multiple body piercings, and oversized clothing, and he knows it. Anytime he wanted Joe to do something, he threatened to come over. Joe didn’t like Jason much either, but since that one time Jason got him out of trouble in grade 9, it seemed like he was always doing what Jason wanted.

“Stop shitting me man.”

“I’m not fucking kidding you. Get here or I’ll go there.” Jason hung up the phone.

Joe slammed down his phone, grabbed his coat, and started driving to Jessica’s house. Jason is annoying, immature, and a slob, but he never goes back on his words. If Joe didn’t show up in the next 30 minutes, Jason will make good of his promise and come to Joe’s house, and that could be disastrous. Why the hell am I friends with him?

Hi Guys! Thanks for reading. Sorry for the long gap between the updates. I was going to update around New Years, but I got a bacterial infections and couldn’t. Then school started, and well… Anyways, enjoy this update and please comment!

Happy Chinese New Year!

Que Sera Sera Chapter 10: Conversations

It was snowing. The first snowfall of the year. Little flakes drifted lazily from the sky to the ground, covering everything with a thin layer fluff.

Ariel looked out the window of the Lotus Café, the little coffee shop she now works at part time. True, Ariel could have gotten a better paying job at an office somewhere, but she resisted. James would have a much tougher time tracking me down if I do minimum wage jobs. He wouldn’t think that I would “stoop this low”.

It was Thursday afternoon, so there were very few patrons in The Lotus. Ariel was relieved; she really needed a rest. The bell above the door dinged, signifying the presence of a customer. A girl smaller than Ariel ran in and plopped herself on a chair near the window. The girl looked tired and wary, and Ariel felt a little sorry for her.

“Hi, what would you like to drink?” Ariel walked over.

“Oh, just coffee, black, thanks.” Rainie replied breathlessly.

Ariel poured her a cup of coffee, “here you go.”

“Thanks,” Rainie replied with her eyes closed.

“Are you alright?”

Rainie smiled tiredly, “yes, I’m just tired. I just moved here from Taiwan, and I’m still suffering from jetlag.”

“Ah,” Ariel smiled, “the coffee should wake you up no problem; we have the strongest coffee in town.”

“Really?”

“You should see this place near exam time. It’s like a zoo.”

Rainie laughed, “I’ll bet, well, I’ll keep that in mind when it’s time for me to write my exams, I have a feeling I’ll need strong coffee then.”

“Awesome, oh, where do you go to university?”

“VU, just down the road.”

“Me too! What are you studying?”

“Well, I haven’t started yet. I’m starting in the winter term when school starts again, but I will be studying art history.”

“That sounds interesting, I’m studying commerce. Why are you here so early then? The winter term doesn’t start until January.”

“I thought I’d come a little early to familiarize my self with the campus and Vancouver. I’ve never been away from Taiwan nor have I ever lived by myself. I had a feeling it will take some adjusting to.”

“Well, good luck. Maybe I’ll see you on campus.” Ariel said as she walked back to the counter.

“Yes, see you.” Rainie replied happily.

————————–

“Hey Ge.”

“Hey Peanut.”

“How many times have I told you not to call me that? I am not that small.” Ariel feigned annoyance.

“I have news.” Something in Ge’s voice told Ariel this was not good news.

“What happened?” She asked worriedly.

“Stop fretting. Nothing big. The guy after you has just left Halifax. Seems like he’s got a tip that you’re out west.”

“Oh.”

“He’s not sure you’re in Vancouver yet though,” Ge quickly said.

“There aren’t that many major cities out west, he’ll figure out I’m here in no time.”

“Not necessarily, he doesn’t know whether you’re in a large city or a small town.”

“How many cities in Western Canada has a large enough Asian population to hide two Chinese girls? Pretty much just Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and maybe Victoria. What should I do?”

“Hang tight, do what you usually do. James is monitoring the air lines for sure right now. It takes time to get you and Miranda aliases, if you make a major move with your current alias, it’ll raise too many red flags.”

“Alright. Thanks Ge.”

“No problem. I’ll let you know ASAP if anything else happens.”

“Ok.”

“Stay safe.”

“I always do.”

Que Sera Sera Chapter 4: Friendly Bantering

“Ari, have you ever had a boyfriend?” Miranda asked one morning at breakfast.

Ariel choked on her milk, “what?”

“A boyfriend, you know, some of the opposite sex that you’re in a romantic relationship with?”

“I know what a boyfriend is Mira.” She paused. “Why’d you ask?”

“Just wondering.”

Ariel stayed silent.

“It’s just that there’s this guy in my class, and he’s really cute. He’s…” Miranda sighed. “He’s absolute dreamy.”

Ariel tried to stop herself from gagging. She didn’t succeed.

Miranda shot Ariel an annoyed look.

“Mira, do you like him?”

“Like him?” Miranda looked perplexed.

“Yes… Are you… attracted to him?” Seeing Miranda’s still perplexed look, she continued, “Do you feel… different when he’s around? Butterflies in your stomach, feeling warm, acting unusual? Hm… feeling nervous?”

“Well… Yeah. I guess.” Miranda said a bit dejectedly, “but it doesn’t matter, it’s not as if he’s interested in me.”

“How do you know that?”

“He’s… him. He’s popular, smart, sporty, and absolutely dreamy, there are lots of girls that are constantly around him. I bet he doesn’t even know I’m alive.”

“Hey, don’t say that. You’re an amazing girl yourself Mira. How many 16 year old girls do you know has a black belt at Tae Kwon Do? How many can apply make up in less than a minute… in a moving car? How many can already do second year university math? How many can put together a fabulous outfit for less than 20 bucks?”

“Of course it sounds amazing when you say it. You’re going to be a lawyer, so of course you know how to twist everything to sound good. Besides, you’re a genius. Though why are you doing a commerce degree? You have a degree in political sciences, why don’t you just apply to law school right now?”

“It’s less conspicuous. There aren’t that many 19 year olds in law school.” Ariel grinned goofily. “Just go for Mr. Dreamy. You never know unless you try. Just don’t try to impress him with your Tae Kwon Do skills. You might end up knocking him unconscious, which normally sends them running in the other direction.”

“You’re hilarious Ari. You’re so funny I forgot to laugh. And about the whole 19 years old part, aren’t you a ‘disguised’ as 23 year old this time?”

“So? Anyways, just tell him, ok? And let’s go. I’m late for accounting class with the Wicked Witch of the West.”

“You don’t make any sense Ari.”

————————-

“Hello?” Ariel said cautiously into the phone.

“Hey kiddo.” Replied Ge.

Ariel smiled, “Hey grandpa.”

“You wound me.” Ge sniffed into the phone.

“Yeah, yeah.” Ariel rolled her eyes dramatically, then realized Ge can’t see her. “How is everything?”

Ge knew she meant James. “Everything is fine. He doesn’t know where you are, but he does have someone out looking for you. According to my sources, he’s in Edmonton right now, and hasn’t a clue that you’re where you are.”

Ariel sighed and relaxed, “thanks.”

“No problem, I’ll get one of my guys to give him a false tip that you’re in Halifax, that should get him off your trail for a while.”

“Thanks Ge.”

“So when are you coming home?”

“Home?” Ariel asked cynically.

“Yes Ariel, home.”

“You know as well as I do that I don’t consider that place home.”

Ge sighed, “Why do we have this argument every time we have a conversation? It’s been a year and a half Ariel. You’re 19, almost 20, he can’t do anything to you anymore.”

“What about Mira? She 15. If I go back, James gets custody of her. I can’t let that happen.”

“Come on Ariel. You can only hide for so long, sooner or later, he’s going to find you, he’s got connections every where. And then you have to pack up, move, and the cycle starts all over again.”

“I know Ge. I’m not going back. Not until Mira turns 18, and even then, I’m not going back. Like you said, he’s got connections everywhere; the only way to remain out of his grasp is to be invisible.”

“I don’t understand why you keep running away from him, I know he’s strict, but-“

Ariel cut him off. “I can’t tell you why Ge, but trust me, there is a very good reason, and if you were me, you would make exactly the same choices I have. Just trust me.”

There was a long silence, “You’re so annoyingly stubborn.”

“And that’s why you love me.” Ariel joked.

Ge sighed, “Just try to stay out of trouble, ok? I don’t want to hack the police department’s computer again.”

“That was not my fault! That guy was hitting on me, so I hit him.”

“He was a police officer.”

“He was at least 30 years old and he had a wedding ring on. I was 17. Creepy pedophile.”

“He arrested you.”

“And you bailed me out. It’s good to know the leader of the mafia.”

“I am not the leader of the mafia!”

“Fine, the leader of the Canadian mafia.”

“It’s not a mafia.”

“Fine, fine, ‘The Secret Investigation Service’.”

“I should have never told you that.”

“I knew anyways.”

“How.”

“I’m a genius.”

“And extremely modest.”

“Very.” Ariel said angelically.

“You’re insufferable.” Ge complained.

“If I’m insufferable, that makes you the friend of the insufferable, which is quite sad.”

“I have no time to quibble with you.” Ge said in a snotty voice, “I have more important things to do.”

“Sure, sure. I gotta go anyways. Talk to you later.”

“See you. Stay safe.”

“I always do.”

“Not.”

“I resent that.”

Ge’s laughter was the last thing she heard before the phone disconnected.

Que Sera Sera Chapter 2: Lopsided Discussions

The car screeched to a halt. Time slowed as Ariel jumped, rolled across the hood of the car, and promptly fell on the ground.

“Ow!” She groaned as she sat up.

“What the hell is your problem?” The driver of the car came out of his car. “It’s dangerous to jump on moving cars!”

Ariel picked herself up from the ground. She has a headache, her knee hurts, and this annoying guy is yelling at her. “It’s more dangerous to charge full speed at pedestrians!”

Joe was speechless for a moment. Most girls don’t yell at him. “Regardless, you shouldn’t jump on cars when they charge at you.”

Ariel game him an annoyed look. “If I were to punch you really hard right now, where would you rather I punch, your gut or you legs?”

“What?” Joe was surprised at the sudden change of topic. “Are you going to punch me right now?”

“No,” she paused, “though that is a tempting idea. I am merely pointing out that I would rather get hit by a car in the legs than in the stomach.”

“How about you watch where you’re going?”

“I was watching where I was going.” Ariel was getting mad. “When I stepped off the curb, there were no cars on the road. You’re the one that turned too quickly in your new BMW 645, and instead of stopping for pedestrians at the crosswalk, you barrel through and hit one. And when that said pedestrian, me in this case, tries to reduce the amount of damage both she and your nice car incurs, she gets yelled at by the very irresponsible, rude, and non-sympathetic owner?”

“But-“

“Sir, you have been in an accident recently, right? You scrapped your car against another one?”

“Yeah, how-”

“The person that repainted your car is not very competent; the coloring for the repainted area is off by about half a shade.”

Joe scrutinized his car, “I repainted my car, and I don’t see how the coloring is any different.”

“I don’t either.”

“What?” Joe looks perplexed, “then how –“

“Judging by the way you drive, it’s fairly obvious that you’re not a careful driver. I don’t need to remind you that you hit me with your car today, and it is within my rights to file a report. It’s relatively easy to get your license revoked sir, especially if you have had multiple accidents. Unless…” Ariel paused. “Are you driving with a suspended license?”

Joe suddenly felt like he was back in elementary school, when if he didn’t tell the truth, he was going to be punished severely. He nodded, and then realized what he just did, and shook his head profusely.

Ariel smirked, “then I suggest that the next time you choose to hit a pedestrian that you not yell at them. Though I must say, obeying traffic laws is probably a better idea. Have a nice day.” Ariel stalked off.

Before Joe had a chance to chase after her, a car honked. Joe’s car was blocking the road.

Joe aimed one last look at Ariel’s retreating back before getting in his car. What a weird girl. She doesn’t make any sense.

——————-

“Ariel! I’m home!” Miranda yelled as she burst into the basement.

“Oh hey, how was your day?” Ariel asked while putting a giant band aid on her knee.

“Good.” She paused. “This is going to sound redundant, but that’s a huge bandage.”

“I know.”

“Aren’t you going to tell me what happened?”

“Aren’t you going to ask?”

Miranda rolled her eyes. “You’re such a kid… Alright, I’ll bite, what happened?”

“Well,” Ariel began dramatically.

Miranda threw her backpack at Ariel.

“Hey!” Ariel protested. “You’re injuring an injured person!”

“Could you cut the drama and just get to it.”

“Fine.” Ariel continued in a mock serious tone. “I got hit by a car.”

“What?”

“Yeah, I was crossing the street when a brand new 2004 BMW 645

Convertible, which is a really nice car by the way, turned too fast on to the road I was walking across and hit me.”

“Ouch.”

“I know! And the irresponsible driver yelled at me after too.”

“I didn’t mean you.” Miranda said dryly. “I meant, ‘ouch, poor guy.’ He must have been terrified when you verbally slew him.”

“Hey, I resent that!”

“At any rate, was he cute?”

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“It doesn’t. Was he cute?”

Ariel thought for a moment. “He was ok.”

“Cuter than Ge?”

“Why must you compare every guy I meet to Ge?”

“Because you’re the only person that doesn’t realize he’s madly in love with you. After all he’s done for us; I just want to make sure no one encroach on his territory.” Miranda grinned.

“Yeah, right.” Ariel scoffed. “You watch too many dramas.”

“So was Mr. Delinquent?”

“Was he what?” Ariel feigned ignorance.

“Was he cuter than Ge?”

“Hm… what if he was?”

“I’d be forced to kill him then.” Miranda feigned seriousness.

“You’re silly Mira.”

“I know.” Before Miranda has a chance to prod further, her stomach growled. “So what’s for dinner?”

“What’s your least favourite food?” Ariel raised her eyebrow.

“Celery? Ew!”

“Well, you’re in luck, because we’re not having it.” Ariel laughed.

“You’re so mean!”

“And it’s fun!”

Pouting dramatically, Miranda went over to the fridge to get food.

Ariel breathed a sigh of relief. At least she stopped grilling me about that guy. Mira can be so determined when it comes to my love life… or the lack of one. I hope she never thinks of asking me why, I don’t want to lie to her. Ariel got up. Though now that I think about it, that guy was kind of cute, a bit girly maybe, but cute.

Que Sera Sera Chapter 1: New Beginnings and a Car

Vancouver 2004

“Miranda Lin! Breakfast!” Called Ariel Lin from the kitchen.

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Miranda replied.

“Hurry up or you’re going to be late.”

“Ok, Ok! Jeez, why are you so impatient?” Asked Miranda as she ran into the kitchen.

“Because your counsellor won’t be happy if you’re late on the first day of school.” Replied Ariel. “You do want a good first day, don’t you?”

“Yeah, yeah.” said Miranda as she sat in a wobbly chair in the kitchen.

“Nervous?”

“Nah, this is what, my third new school in the last year? I’m use to it.” Miranda tried to sound brave.

“Sorry Mira, I know–” Ariel started after an uncomfortable silence.

“Stop apologizing Ari, I know you’re not trying to make my life difficult. It’s not your fault that we’re orphans with an abusive stepfather. I appreciate you trying to get us out of that life. Really.”

Ariel still looks unconvinced, “But you have to put up with–”

“I like switching schools. It’s always a new experience.” Miranda said while stuffing down the last bit of toast. “I’m done.”

“Oh right. Let’s go!” Ariel tried injecting a bit of enthusiasm into her voice. Inwardly she sighed. No matter what Mira says, Ariel felt guilty every time Miranda starts a new school, and that happens very often. I should stop depriving her of a normal childhood.

“Ari?” Mira waved her hand in front of Ariel’s face. “Stop zoning out and let’s go!”

“Oh right,” Ariel snapped out of it with a start. “Have I said you’re very mature for a 15 year old?”

“I’m not mature; you just think I’m mature because you’re so immature.”

Ariel rolled her eyes as she locked the door to her house and started walking to Mira’s school. Ariel and Miranda don’t actually live in a house. They lived in a small and dark basement of one. Having little money, it was all Ariel could afford.

“So what’s my life story this time Ari?” Miranda asked.

“I’ve kept it the same as the one we had in Calgary. I think we can still use it for a while.”

“Ah, so my name is Miranda Zhang, not Miranda Lin. I’m from Calgary; I’m orphaned with an older sister. I use to live with my grandma until she passed away 2 years ago. I like volleyball, watching TV, and cooking and I don’t like soccer, reading, or celery. Is that good? I’ve kept my interests the same. I figure they can’t help James track us down.”

“That’s good. Your interests can stay the same. Don’t lie too much though, stick as close to the truth as possible. As for James… well, we have Hu Ge to warn us, if James really gets close, we’ll leave right away. Don’t get too worried, our stepfather is a powerful man, but even he isn’t omnipotent, I doubt he’ll find us that easily.”

Miranda nodded. “I don’t want to go back to his house. He’s…”

“He’s violent, unpredictable, abusive and uncaring.” Ariel sighed, “I know Mira, that’s why I took you and left. You would have been stuck there until you’re 18 at least. And you know how powerful he is. He could easily control you like he controlled mom, and the last thing I want is for you to end up like her.”

For a second, the image of her mother, dirty, beaten up, with tears streaming down her face appeared in Miranda’s head. She pushed it out. I will not end up like mom. No matter what, I’ll be free of James’ clutches one day.

———————

After dropping Miranda off, Ariel took the bus to Vancouver University, or VU, which is a small university located on the east side of the city. She was due to start classes there next week, and Ariel is slightly nervous. This was her 3rd university in the last two years, even though Ariel is a semi genius, if it wasn’t for Hu Ge, her friend, she would never be able to transfer her credits between universities. It has been Ariel’s life long dream to become a lawyer, and getting into law school won’t be easy. Ariel owes Ge so much. If it wasn’t for him, Ariel would never be able to get away from James, her abusive stepfather. As powerful as James is, the Hu family is more powerful that him. Ariel befriended the Hu’s heir, Ge, when her parents were still alive. Ge knows everything, no, almost everything, about Ariel, and has helped her in every way he could. He was the one who alerted her every time James was about to find her. He was the one that arranged for Ariel to attend classes and transfer her credits from university to university all over Canada, sometimes with different names. He got them their fake ID’s, and provided much of their emotional support. Ariel owed Ge big time, and when she tries to thank him, he would always brush it off, saying “that’s what friends are for.” Ariel knew he was just saying that, Ge constantly goes above and beyond what he needed to do as a friend. The only thing Ariel refused from him was money. She didn’t want his money, everything else he did; she could chalk it up to favours done by a friend even when it seems far too much. Yet if she took his money, she’d feel way too indebted to him. She would feel like a puppet, and for that reason, she insisted on working, and dipping into the small fund of money left her by her father to support Mira and herself.

Ariel walked around the campus, trying to familiarize her self with the buildings for her classes. I am so glad VU is small, at least I won’t get lost easily. She paused. What if James finds me? Ariel pushed that thought out of her mind and continued walking. After walking around and talking to a few people, she decided to call it a day and go home. As she crossed the street on the pedestrian crosswalk to the nearest bus stop, a car suddenly turned on to the road she was on. The car charged at Ariel so quickly she barely had time to blink, let alone run away. Reflexively, she jumped as the driver of the car hit his brake.
